Thank you for choosing WaterWorks as your next field trip destination!  We are excited to welcome your group of students to our facility!   Below is a description of each field trip option to let you know what to expect!.

Educational Facility Tour

Our facility is located in the former Hartselle water treatment facility.  We have converted this building into a “green” educational center.  Students will learn about Alabama native wildlife and biodiversity, pollution, green design and biomimicry, constructed wetlands, and natural water treatment.   We make adjustments to our educational material based on the age of the students attending.

Canoeing

Students will don a lifejacket and board a canoe with another student to set out on an adventure on the Flint Creek. We start the excursion with a safety lesson from one of our trained guides.  Students will learn how to paddle their canoes and what to do in the unlikely event that they capsize their canoe.  Our guides are trained in open water rescue and are ready to help in any way.   Students should wear appropriate clothing and shoes that can get wet.  We recommend shoes or sandals that are attached to the students’ foot (i.e.- no flip flops).  Any “nice” clothing, shoes, or accessories should stay at home.  No matter the swimming ability of the student, parent, or teacher, life jackets will be worn at all times.  Canoeing is limited to 5th grade and above.

Guided Nature Hike

Our guided nature hike takes students along the bank of the Flint Creek to our final destination, a real beaver dam!  The full hike is less than 2 miles round trip over the course of an hour and a half.  Students will hop over or around fallen logs and duck under low hanging branches!  We recommend close toed shoes that can get dirty and a bottle of water (either to carry or have immediate access to after the hike).  Some students, teachers, or parents may prefer to wear long pants.
