Pitcher Plant Bog

Did you know that Alabama is ranked #1 in carnivorous plant biodiversity? Alabama has more species of carnivorous plants that any other state in the country! Pitcher plants play a crucial role in nutrient cycling in their ecosystems.

Pitcher plant bogs are rare and ecologically unique wetlands that support a variety of plant and animal species, many of which are endemic or endangered. An on-site bog will provide students with the opportunity to learn about biodiversity, conservation, and the importance of protecting rare habitats. Adding pitcher plants to our constructed wetland cells will also aid in the water treatment efforts of our facility!

Freshwater Mussel Tank

A single freshwater mussel can filter 8-15 gallons of water daily, removing contaminants like bacteria, heavy metals, and pharmaceuticals. Observing this in a tank helps students understand their role in maintaining water quality.

With many mussel species endangered due to habitat loss and pollution, a mussel tank underscores the importance of conservation and highlights their use as bioindicators of ecosystem health, offering insights into broader environmental issues.

Green Roof

Students can learn a wide range of topics from plants grown on a green roof. These include adaptation and survival, photosynthesis and respiration, plant life cycles, and water management. Green roofs absorb rainwater, reducing runoff, decreasing the risk of flooding, and reducing the amount of pollutants entering local waterways.
